For years and years I’ve been all about European royalty in my historical fiction. Don’t get me wrong, I still am right now, in fact I’m currently reading the newest of Sharon Kay Penman’s novels about the Angevin Plantagenets (think: Richard the Lionheart). I’m still very interested in seeing an innovative novel about a fascinating but little-mentioned royal woman from the medieval or Renaissance Europe. However, my brain is currently stuck in the years between the US Civil War and World War II. I am currently searching for novels about this period (or slightly earlier, if you’re talking Europe) featuring women and focusing on the social changes taking place during that time. The 1920s are very hot now and I would consider a Prohibition-era novel (I adored The Other Typist) but I don’t want to chase current trends too much, so am particularly interested in other subjects in this general time period. I also have a slight bias towards stories in more urban settings, although I won’t completely count out novels with a pioneering attitude.
