A. R. KAHLER NOMINATED FOR TWO BOOK AWARDS

Seattle, WA – January 23, 2014 – Novelist Alex Kahler, writing under the pen name A. R. Kahler, has been nominated for two prestigious book awards. It was announced today by his literary agency.

The Endeavor Award for the best science fiction and fantasy book from a Pacific Northwest Writer

The Compton Crook Award

“As a wanderer and a circus artist, it was almost fated I’d write a series set in an otherworldly circus. The Immortal Circus is a strange and wonderful trilogy, and I feel strange and wonderful myself to have my writing recognized by two separate award organizations,” Kahler said.

Endeavor Award

The Immortal Circus: Act Two is one of thirty books nominated for the Endeavor Award.

The Endeavor Award is for a distinguished SCIENCE FICTION or FANTASY BOOK written by a Pacific Northwest author or authors and published in the previous year.

The award represents a collaboration between writers and fans of Science Fiction and Fantasy to encourage the growth of literature in the field and recognize works of excellence. It is named for H.M. Bark Endeavour, the ship of Northwest explorer Capt. James Cook.

The award is announced annually at OryCon, held in Portland, Oregon. The next award will be presented at OryCon 36 (November 2014) for a book published during 2013. The award is accompanied by a grant of $1,000.

Compton Crook Award

The members of the Baltimore Science Fiction Society, Inc. (BSFS) created the Compton Crook Award in 1982 to honor the best first novel of the year written by an individual author (collaborations are not eligible) in the Science Fiction/ Fantasy/Horror genre. Since its inception, the award has been presented at Balticon — the four-day annual Maryland regional science fiction convention produced by BSFS, currently held on Memorial Day weekend in the Baltimore, MD area.

The Award was named in memory of Towson State College Professor of Natural Sciences Compton Crook, who wrote under the name Stephen Tall, and who died in 1981. Professor Crook was active for many years in the Baltimore Science Fiction Society and was a staunch champion of new works in the fields eligible for the award. The first Compton Crook Award was presented in 1983 for Donald Kingsbury’s debut novel Courtship Right, a work published in 1982.

The award includes a framed award document and, for the novel’s author, a check for $1,000 and an invitation to be the Compton Crook Guest at Balticon for two years.

A. R. Kahler

Alex Kahler is a novelist and circus artist, which makes The Immortal Circus trilogy a natural for him. His second series, The Hunted, debuts in October from Spencer Hill Press.

Born in Iowa and educated across the States, he’s taught circus in Amsterdam and Madrid, gotten madly lost in the Scottish wilderness, drummed with Norse shamans, and received his Masters in Creative Writing from Glasgow University.

When he’s not writing or climbing in the rafters, he’s probably drinking coffee. And seeing as he currently resides in Seattle, that’s a job unto itself. He can be found on Twitter @ARKahler or at www.arkahler.com.
