Moving Up

April 7, 2014

Hello internet! Connor here. My first month at my new home is drawing to a close, and I’m so thrilled to be part of this great team. It’s a bold new day in my career and I’m rushing out into the beautiful spring air with my arms wide open, doing my best to catch all these great submissions. This metaphor is getting away from me; suffice it to say I’m having a great time and I’m confident this is where I am supposed to be.

Alex White

With this new job comes new clients! I’m looking to expand my list pretty rapidly in the coming months, as I had a very small list at my previous agency. The first of these brave soldiers joining me on this march toward hopefully making some money is Alex White (@thegearheart), a brilliantly talented artist whose debut novel, a thriller with paranormal elements, is like nothing else I’ve ever read.  Alex is also the author of a popular podcast audio novel, THE GEARHEART, which you can hear via his website.

Cass Morris

In another bit of exciting news, this month I met one of my clients for the very first time! Being a literary agent is very different from other kinds of talent agenting, where the actors or models or what-have-you are in the office pretty regularly. Writers don’t have to be physically present for a book pitch, so they can send a manuscript from just about anywhere with an internet connection. While I relish getting to know my clients over the phone and via email, there’s no real substitute for actually getting some face time.

Historical fantasy author Cass Morris (@CassRMorris) was here in New York for just a few days, but in that time we managed to get together for lunch and take a rare example of the elusive agent-client selfie:

My selfie skills need work. I also need a haircut.

Hopefully we’ll be seeing much more of each other, once her books take the world by storm and we have to organize the press tour, the movie premiere, and all that jazz.

Writers: be part of the all-new Connor Goldsmith experience! I want to know you, and I want to know your work. There has never been a better time to catch my eye than right now, when I’m actively working to expand my list. I’m always looking for adult Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror, as ever, but I’m especially looking to expand into Thriller/Crime and ‘Upmarket’ (an awful, snooty word, but bear with me) Commercial Fiction. I have a particular interest in stories from perspectives we unfortunately see less often in publishing — LGBT authors, authors of color, authors with disabilities, international authors, any combination of the above: I want to hear from you!

Oh, and how about that Captain America, am I right? What a dreamboat.
