What is New Adult Anyway?

April 30, 2014

I recently returned from the fabulous Storymakers conference in Layton, Utah, and over the course of the weekend I noticed a lot of excitement about the New Adult category of books.

For those who don’t know, publishers and booksellers hope that New Adult, targeted at college-aged adults, will catch fire like the Young Adult category did for teens over the past few decades. I hope so too.

New Adult grew out of the astronomical success of the book 50 Shades of Grey, so to date the New Adult books that have been rocketing up the bestseller charts have all been erotic romance in nature. That’s fine. Everything has to start somewhere. But I hope to see some broadening of this category to include many more genres, and all degrees of sensuality, so it will not implode or topple over from its narrow focus.

We’ll be teaching a Writers Digest Boot Camp on New Adult on May 8-9 and if you’re interested in this hot new category, you may want to sign up. It begins with a webinar the three of us recorded, and is followed by 2 hours of Q&A the next day. Then you submit your shiny New Adult pages for us to critique. Writers Digest sure knows how to educate writers, I must say.

Hope to see you New Adult authors in cyberspace!
